Scholars can’t agree on who is the author of the Book of Hebrews. But they can probably agree that he extends an extraordinary invitation to believers of all ages: “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings” (Hebrews 10:22).
This call to intimacy is not a casual suggestion but a heartfelt exhortation, urging believers to cultivate a deep and abiding relationship with their Creator. At the heart of this invitation lies a profound truth: Christ’s finished work has opened the door to the Father’s presence, and we are invited to enter.
Seated with Christ
The New Testament reveals a stunning reality: Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, and we are seated with Him (Ephesians 2:6). This positioning is not merely symbolic; it carries profound implications for our spiritual lives. As we occupy this seat, we discover that we share in Christ’s authority, protection, identity, spiritual strength, and blessings.
What did the apostle Paul think about this?
His prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23 underscores the significance of this same reality. He asks that believers might comprehend the “immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe” (Ephesians 1:19). This power is not a distant force but a present reality, available to us as we sit with Christ in heavenly places. So we can say I guess, that Paul is “on the same page” on this one.
Seeking the Things Above
In Colossians 3:1-4 he offers practical guidance for living in this reality. We are exhorted to “seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). This seeking is not a passive endeavor but an active pursuit, requiring us to set our minds on the things of heaven (Colossians 3:2).
As we seek the things above, we begin to experience the profound benefits of intimacy with God. We discover that we are not alone in our struggles, for Christ is seated with us, offering guidance, comfort, and strength. We find that our identity is not defined by our earthly circumstances but by our heavenly position, where we are beloved children of the Father.
As we draw near to Him, we find that He draws near to us, offering us the fullness of His presence, power, and love.
A Life of Intimacy
Intimacy with God is not a distant ideal but a present reality, available to all who seek it. As we occupy our seat with Christ, we discover that we are not alone in our journey but are accompanied by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We find that our lives are transformed, as we experience the profound benefits of intimacy with God.
In a world that often prioritizes busyness and productivity, the invitation to intimacy with God is a refreshing reminder that our truest fulfillment lies in our relationship with Him. As we seek the things above, we find that our lives are filled with purpose, meaning, and joy. Let us, therefore, draw near to God with a sincere heart, seeking the things that are available to us in Christ.
