Wisdom seems to be one of the rarest virtues in the world. An entire book is dedicated to wisdom in the Bible. Scholars generally agree that Jesus Christ Himself identifies with Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 8.
Could these three situations rank as the top three lessons on wisdom in the entire Bible?
The Bible offers many lessons on wisdom, but the top three might be these:
- Solomon’s Request for Wisdom: In 1 Kings 3:5-14, King Solomon is offered anything he wants by God in a dream. Solomon asks for wisdom to govern his people justly, rather than for long life or riches. Pleased with his request, God grants him unparalleled wisdom, as well as wealth and honor. This lesson underscores the value of prioritizing wisdom over material desires and self-interest. Still relevant today!
- Daniel’s Wisdom in Babylon: In Daniel 1:17-20, Daniel and his friends are taken to Babylon and trained in the ways of the Chaldeans. Despite the pressure to conform, they remain faithful to God. God grants them exceptional wisdom and understanding, surpassing all the other trainees. Later, in Daniel 2, Daniel interprets King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream when none of the Babylonian wise men can, demonstrating the superiority of divine wisdom over human knowledge. Wisdom can save lives!
- Jesus’ Teachings on Taxes to Caesar: In Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. They ask if it is right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not. Jesus, perceiving their malice, asks them to show Him a coin and inquires whose image is on it. When they reply “Caesar’s,” He responds, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” His wise answer marvels them and avoids the trap, teaching about the proper relationship between civic duty and spiritual obligation. We seem to lack wisdom in this area even today, with many believers unsure about getting involved in how our cities and our country is being managed and governed.
Which would be your top three wisdom lessons from God’s Word?
